Wrestling is one of the most physically demanding sports around. It takes its toll on the body of our committed heroes. Mick Foley is a prime example of that. However, the emotional aspect of a wrestler's lifestyle often gets swept under the carpet.
All of those weeks and months touring the globe are bound to have a serious impact on the relationships of a global superstar. So, how exactly do they cope? What does it take to be the other half of a world-famous wrestler? Do the pros outweigh the cons? Let's move to a deeper level and find out.
Famous Wrestling Couples
The easiest way for a professional wrestler to deal with potential relationship problems is, undoubtedly, to commit to another member of the roster. This allows the couples to tour and perform together, which would take away a lot of emotional stress. Here are some of the most famous wrestling couples over the years:
Triple H and Stephanie McMahon – The infamous Hunter Hearst Helmsley is a perfect example of dating within the professional circle. When first breaking onto the scene back in the late 90s, Triple H struck up an off-screen romance with Chyna. That relationship lasted briefly before Triple H married Vince McMahon's daughter, Stephanie. This wrestling power couple married in 2003 and went on to start a family together. The pair are still going strong today.
CM Punk and AJ Lee – More recently, former world champion CM Punk tied the knot with AJ Lee. The couple dated for a number of years before getting married in a lavish ceremony in June 2014. CM Punk stated that he 'would not be here right now' if it wasn't for Lee's commitment and love. Would this relationship have lasted if the two weren't touring the world together? Who knows. But it certainly improved their chances.
Dating Outside of the Bubble
Plenty of superstars have gone on to have successful relationships outside of the WWE bubble. However, it hasn't always been easy. Let's take a closer look at some of the most famous names, and their relationships over the years.
John Cena – One thing is for certain – John Cena is not gay. The 45-year-old, former world champion has dated his fair share of beautiful women over the years. Cena has been engaged three different times over the years. This proves that dating while constantly being on the road isn't an easy feat. However, Cena finally tied the knot with Shay Shariatzadeh in October 2020 after a couple of years of dating.
The Rock – Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnston is arguably the most famous character to ever emerge from the world of professional wrestling. He essentially paved the way for wrestling to movies, which many others are now following. However, The Rock has experienced plenty of peaks and valleys in his private life, too. Dwayne Johnstone divorced Dany Garcia in 2008 after 11 years of marriage and 3 children. In 2019 The Rock remarried with Lauren Hashian.
What Does it Take?
Truthfully, there is no correct way to run a relationship. Like all of us, wrestlers face many issues on a day-to-day basis. Relationships are never easy. It doesn't matter if they're married to a fellow member of the roster or not, they're still likely to encounter their fair share of problems. The only major difference is that professional relationships usually hit the headlines, which adds more pressure.
