Finn Balor talks about the ending to WWE Extreme Rules 2021 and never getting another shot at Roman Reigns.
Finn Balor, the inaugural WWE Universal Champion, has not had much good fortune surrounding that title. After winning the title at WWE SummerSlam in 2016, he was forced to relinquish it the next night due to injury. It took him two and a half years to get another shot at the title and he face Brock Lesnar at the WWE Royal Rumble in 2019 and came up short. It would take him another year and a half, including an excursion to NXT, before he would receive another Universal Championship opportunity, facing Roman Reigns at the 2021 WWE Extreme Rules event.
Finn Balor brought out the demon that night but still came up short against Roman Reigns after the top rope broke before he can hit his finishing move, the Coup de Grace, in what was called "an act of God" at the time. One year later, that finish has yet to be addressed and while speaking with Josh Martinez on Superstar Crossover, Finn Balor reveals that everything was supposed to go in a different direction before the return of Brock Lesnar.
"I feel like it's just been left open-ended, and the finish hasn't been addressed. There was an idea to go a different direction, but then Brock returned, and the direction changed," Finn Balor says. "So that's something you have to kind of come to terms with and understand in WWE that, there's always going to be — if one piece of the jigsaw changes, the whole landscape changes. If someone gets hurt, or someone returns, there's always going to be different ideas and plans in place. So you just got to be able to adapt to the ever-evolving situation. That's what we have to do but I feel like the finish of that match has definitely caused some watercooler talk, so to speak, and the fact that we're still talking about it a year later, is evidence of that, and I feel like in the next couple of months, we should really revisit that and address what happened that night."
Now, Finn Balor has a faction of his own in Judgment Day, should he ever need to even out the odds against The Bloodline. At WWE Extreme Rules in 2022, Finn Balor, with help from his group, defeated Edge in an I Quit match.
